Tool Store Technician at Newmont

Your Role and Contribution

As a Tool Room Technician, your main responsibility is to support the process maintenance team by ensuring efficient management of tools and equipment. You’ll play a key role in facilitating timely maintenance work, reducing downtime, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

You will also be responsible for ensuring proper disposal and segregation of maintenance waste and overseeing the safe use of all equipment in the tool room, including grinders, presses, power tools, and other safety gear.

Key Responsibilities

Tooling Operations

  • Issue hand tools and portable machines to technicians on a daily basis
  • Organize and manage tool inventory in the tool store
  • Track and ensure all borrowed tools are returned in good condition
  • Make sure tools issued are clean, safe, and fully functional
  • Monitor stock levels of consumables and request replenishment when needed
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of tool containers
  • Conduct periodic inventory checks and report to the Workshop Supervisor
  • Keep tool and PPE attrition at acceptable levels
  • Distribute Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to employees

Maintenance Duties

  • Repair or coordinate repairs for damaged or worn tools and report those beyond repair
  • Service and maintain oil dispensers, air regulators, pumps, hose reels, and IBCs
  • Manage waste oil containers and ensure timely emptying
  • Keep the shop floor and yard area clean and free of hazards
  • Oversee or arrange hydrocarbon cleaning activities
  • Maintain workshop flooring in good condition
  • Inspect wash pad facilities and report concerns to the Supervisor

Audit and Compliance Checks

  • Verify and update safety color codes on all tools
  • Conduct audits on toolboxes assigned to Mechanics and Electricians
  • Maintain accurate manual and digital records of all tools
  • Monitor Oil Water Separator systems and prevent overflows
  • Regularly check emergency eye wash stations
  • Keep oil bund containers clean and secured under lock

Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare monthly reports on lost, broken, or damaged tools using appropriate forms
  • Submit all toolroom incident reports and documentation to the Supervisor

Health, Safety and Environmental Standards

  • Take full responsibility for your own health and safety on the job
  • Attend all mandatory safety meetings and training
  • Follow all maintenance and toolroom safety protocols
  • Promote and comply with the company’s safety-first culture and standards

Required Qualifications, Experience, and Competencies

Education

  • A relevant Technical or Vocational Trade Certification is required

Knowledge

  • Understanding of maintenance best practices and industry guidelines
  • Familiarity with the work management process
  • Knowledge of planning and job scheduling

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a mechanical engineering-related role

Technical Competencies

  • Skilled in tool identification and selection
  • Proficient in using computers and maintaining digital records
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Able to multitask efficiently and manage multiple responsibilities
  • Strong work ethic with a results-oriented mindset

Working Conditions

This position is based at our Ahafo North mine site. The physical and environmental demands associated with this role include:

  • Working in confined spaces with exposure to vibrations
  • Operating in a safety-critical and high-noise environment
  • Regular exposure to fumes, heat, dust, sharp edges, and slippery surfaces
  • Handling and lifting heavy materials or using heavy-duty equipment

Required PPE

  • Mandatory use of PPE such as safety helmets, goggles, high-visibility clothing, harnesses, earplugs, and dust masks, depending on job-specific risks
